High in the hills of the Cilento National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape that unfolds south of the Amalfi Coast, this fourteenth-century Franciscan convent has been brought quietly back to life. Founded in 1320 and built just beyond the walls of Cuccaro Vetere, it was for centuries a place of pilgrimage and retreat, and that sense of calm still runs through every stone, arch and fresco.

The restoration has been careful and reverent. Exposed stone walls, original frescoes and reclaimed timber sit beside freestanding bathtubs, handcrafted furniture and softly lit rooms, so the old spirit of the place is felt rather than staged. Seven suites and rooms, each one different, gather around a serene cloister courtyard where white linen curtains lift in the breeze beneath the old bell tower.
At the heart of the day is the Osteria del Convento, where the kitchen cooks in the southern Italian tradition using produce picked from the convent's own garden and sourced from nearby farms. Long lunches and slow dinners are served in the cloister or under the olive trees, and cooking workshops, olive-oil and wine tastings bring guests closer to the flavours of Cilento.

Days here move gently. There is a stone swimming pool set against the open valley, a Finnish sauna and hot tubs for cooler evenings, and Pilates in the secret garden. Beyond the walls, the national park opens onto ancient trails, medieval hill villages and a turquoise-edged coastline that remains, remarkably, off the beaten tourist path.
An adults-only refuge, the convent lends itself equally to a honeymoon, a quiet couple's escape or an exclusive-use wedding or celebration, with a dedicated team on hand to shape every detail. Closed through the winter, it reopens each spring as one of Cilento's most singular places to stay.
