Piedmont is Italy at its most refined and least hurried, a north-western region cradled by the Alps and threaded with glacial lakes. Here the Langhe roll away in ordered vineyards that give Barolo and Barbaresco, while Lake Orta and Lake Maggiore lie mirror-still beneath wooded hills.
